Normal Bias are back with Soft Power, their first new music since the 2024 debut album Kingdom Come. The single is out now, its official video arrived on 9 October, and it is the first taste of the duo’s next album, Ways of Keeping Clean, due in 2027 on DKA Records.
The track runs on hard basslines and stacked synths, with Matt Weiner’s vocal sitting somewhere the band’s own press notes call “Hutchence-meets-Gahan.” It sounds like a band that grew up on EBM and synthpop in equal measure and sees no reason to pick one.
Lyrically it aims at the screen in your hand. In the band’s words, Soft Power “confronts the numbing effects of propagandized multimedia addiction that looms over the modern world and enables the worst instincts of our leaders and institutions and leads us further into nowhere and nothing.”
The video, directed by Logan Devlin, mixes live performance with stop-motion animation set against painterly 16-bit desert landscapes, all run through a VHS glitch. Weiner sings while Chris C plays among melting clocks and defaced eyes.
Normal Bias are Matt Weiner and Chris C, split between New York and Atlanta. They describe their sound, tongue firmly in cheek, as “equal parts techno synthpop and ruthless venture capital.” Kingdom Come came out in 2024 through DKA and Synthicide, and the duo have shared stages with Nitzer Ebb, Boy Harsher, Pixel Grip and Buzz Kull. They are currently on the road with Spike Hellis.
