Heldautomat have released Liebe ist endlich, out since 9 October on Town And Towers Records. It is the third single from the Dortmund duo’s debut album Zwischen den Lichtern, due on 23 October, and the official video went up on the label’s YouTube channel the day before.
The title translates as “love is finite,” and the song means it literally. A slow, cinematic synth intro takes its time before the track settles into restrained synthpop. The band sum it up on Bandcamp as “no metaphors, no way out, no redemption. Just the quiet realisation that things come to an end.”
Heldautomat are Christian Purwien and Thomas Kowa, the same pair behind Purwien & Kowa, whose bright Italo-disco single we covered last week. This project is the darker, quieter sibling: analogue synthesizers, a restrained piano and a drum machine under Purwien’s vocal, with Olaf Wollschläger producing.
The single comes with two extras. There is a Purwien & Kowa club mix of the title track, which pushes it onto the dance floor, and a Videomix of Am ersten Tag, the duo’s debut single from May.
Zwischen den Lichtern runs to ten tracks. It collects all three singles, including Anders sein, a song Purwien wrote with Andreas Sippel for his former band Second Decay, plus a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt with piano by Eugene Kazantsev. The band’s album notes also point to a dry joke in the booklet, which warns listeners off Purwien & Kowa because they “only make music for retro nerds with impaired hearing.”
