Los Angeles futurepop act State of the Union is back with When Daylight Dies, a self-released single that landed on Bandcamp on 5 October 2026 and arrived on Apple Music on 10 October. It is the project’s first new song since the 2023 singles Purgatory and Lifeline.
Fronted by Johann Sebastian, State of the Union describes itself as an electronic industrial band whose dance-driven sound mixes synthpop and darkwave with the new wave, EBM and electro of the ’80s and ’90s. On Bandcamp the new track is tagged futurepop, indupop, synthpop and darkwave.
When Daylight Dies runs just under four and a half minutes, and its lyrics deal with loss and memory: empty rooms that “still know their names”, promises that couldn’t be kept, and a chorus about the moment “we return to live when daylight dies”, because “nothing ever lasts”.
The project’s fifth studio album, Indupop, came out on Infacted Recordings in 2018, followed on the same label by the Bad Flower EP in 2020, with remixes from Ruined Conflict, C-Lekktor, 64 Rockets, Nordika and others. In comments quoted by Side-Line, Johann Sebastian said he hopes the new song “connects with you, and we look forward to sharing more music with you soon.”
