Eric Bartholow takes one of the most loved tunes in arcade history back to the open road: a synthwave version of “Splash Wave” from Sega’s Out Run.
“Splash Wave” is one of the radio tracks Hiroshi Kawaguchi wrote for Out Run, and Bartholow’s reason for covering it is a personal one. He grew up in the Sega arcades playing Space Harrier, After Burner and Altered Beast, often with his brother, and whenever he sat down at the Out Run cabinet, “Splash Wave” was the station he picked. Now he has recorded his own take on it.
The new version runs five and a half minutes and is out now on Spotify and Apple Music, a fitting tribute to a soundtrack that helped shape the whole synthwave and outrun sound.
