Munich duo Rue Oberkampf have released Wehmut, a six-track album out on 15 October 2026 on Young And Cold Records. It is their first album since Liebe in 2022, and it comes digitally, on CD digipak with an eight-page lyrics booklet, and on brown transparent gatefold vinyl.
The title is a German word with no English equivalent. In the band’s own notes it sits between melancholy and nostalgia: “A yearning for a beautiful place you once knew, or one you have never been to, yet somehow miss all the same.”
Julia de Jouy and Oliver Maier drew the record from the Bavarian Forest, especially the Goldsteig trail, from the sea between Antwerp and Hanko in Finland, which they crossed on a container ship, from the Wanderweg zines of Haus Nostromo, and from post-metal.
Those places are audible. Waves recorded at Falkensteiner Strand in Kiel run through Sonne, forest sounds from Buchberger Leite near Freyung sit under Darkness, and Into the Woid carries Scottish owls and woodland from the BBC Sound Library. Josip Tijan of Thymian plays the acoustic guitar on Darkness, which now has its own official video.
The running order is Tonight, Come on Moon, Blanc Poney, Into the Woid, Sonne and Darkness. Blanc Poney is an older song the duo had loved for years but felt was wrong for Liebe, so they rearranged and re-recorded it from scratch. On keeping the album to six tracks, they told Side-Line: “Sometimes, saying enough is part of saying something honestly.”
Johannes Vopel and Wolfgang Lehmann mixed the album, Ludwig Maier mastered the digital and CD editions and Eric Van Wonterghem the vinyl. Artwork and design are by Kinnat Sóley.
