Nashville alternative pop band Nightly have brought in synthwave duo The Midnight for a new version of 1989, released on 16 October 2026 as a single and as the closing track of the expanded album THE VOID PART 2.
The Midnight are singer-songwriter Tyler Lyle and producer Tim McEwan. The credits list Lyle as a songwriter alongside Nightly’s Jonathan Capeci, Joey Beretta and Nick Sainato. Nightly produced the track and Jeff Braun mixed it.
1989 first appeared on Nightly’s album THE VOID on 31 October 2025, and it has since returned in versions with Charli Lucas and Fly By Midnight, plus a Leondis remix. The Midnight take stretches the song to almost four minutes.
It is a song about a record that brings a lost love straight back: singing Bad Blood and Wildest Dreams, windows down in the back of a car, until the chorus lands on the line “I lost you and 1989.”
The official lyric video above went up on Nightly’s YouTube channel as a joint upload with The Midnight.
THE VOID PART 2 runs to 17 tracks. It gathers the nine songs of THE VOID and adds eight more, among them the single BAD DREAMS and goosebumps featuring Taylor Lautner, before closing with 1989.
Nightly play Nashville on 30 October, then head out in January 2027 for dates in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, Manila, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
1989 with The Midnight is out now on all major platforms.
